A group of over one hundred Virginia Tech football players and staff recently transformed a practice field into a carpentry workshop, constructing 40 twin beds for children facing hardship.
The effort, part of the Hokies For Community Initiative, paired the athletes with the nonprofit Sleep in Heavenly Peace, an organization that provides bedding to families in need.
In addition to their labor, the Hokies contributed a $5,000 donation that was matched by The Hokie Way, doubling the impact of their giving.

Transfer quarterback Bryce Baker, who joined the program this season, spoke about the personal significance of the project, saying that serving the community reflects the team's core values.
Matthew Sams, executive director of The Hokie Way, highlighted that the bed‑building event is just one facet of a broader outreach that includes support for veterans and animals.
With the football season kicking off in Blacksburg on September 5 against VMI, the players see the service work as a prelude to representing their university on the field.
