A Late‑Blooming Coach
Tony Propst first made his mark at South Rowan High School, where he excelled as a point guard and as a defensive back and quarterback for the football team.
His basketball squad captured the Sam Moir Christmas Classic title, the first in school history, and he contributed to a standout season that included a 13.4‑point average in his senior year, sharing the court with teammates such as Adrian Parker, Jason Cross, Levar Heggins and Anthony Morgan.
On the football side, Propst logged three interceptions in a sophomore season and later took over as quarterback, finishing with a 6‑5 record, earning a reputation as a dynamic player.
Setbacks threatened to derail his path — a broken foot, a shooting, and a car accident — but each obstacle only sharpened his resolve, and his wife’s encouragement kept his dream alive.
At 36, he earned a spot on the Charlotte Elite roster of the Tobacco Road Basketball League, a testament to his perseverance and the mentorship he received from figures like Ray Brothers in the Rowan Youth Football League.
Now retired from playing, Propst channels his experience into coaching, guiding young athletes and giving back to the community that shaped him, while also reflecting on the lessons learned from his father, uncle, and the many mentors who believed in his potential.
