A New Era for Topeka Hockey
After a 16‑year absence, youth hockey is making its comeback in Topeka, thanks to a partnership between the Topeka Scarecrows and the Bison Ice Sports Association. The collaboration brings together a professional franchise and a regional ice‑sports nonprofit to relaunch the program with five age‑group teams.
The revived program will field teams across five age divisions, offering local kids a structured pathway to develop on the ice. The schedule calls for eight home games in Topeka and eight road contests in the Kansas City area, giving players a taste of both local and regional competition.
Professional players from the Scarecrows organization will work directly with the youth squads, providing mentorship and skill development. Ty Dragoo, a longtime figure in the community, and Don Lewis, who oversees operations for the association, are slated to lead the outreach efforts.
Building a Hockey Town
Beyond the games, the Scarecrows have pledged to embed themselves in the local hockey ecosystem, aiming to transform Topeka into a recognized hockey town. Registration for the youth program remains open until the end of August, allowing families to sign up before the fall season kicks off.
Games are expected to begin shortly after the Scarecrows’ own season starts, creating a natural transition from professional to amateur play. The initiative also includes community clinics, school outreach and equipment drives, all designed to lower barriers to participation.
