USA Basketball has named its assistant coaching roster for the upcoming 2027 Basketball World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, appointing Mark Daigneault, J.B. Bickerstaff, and Mark Few to the staff that will work under head coach Erik Spoelstra. The selection marks a significant moment for the program, as Spoelstra will lead the national team for the first time, while the assistants bring a mix of new perspectives and deep-rooted experience.
Building Continuity Before the Competitions
Spoelstra expressed enthusiasm about starting the collaborative process early, emphasizing the importance of chemistry and communication among the coaching group. "We’re excited to begin this journey together," he said, noting that early planning will help the staff align strategies and foster a unified approach for the tournaments in Qatar and Los Angeles.
Daigneault, who previously served as a video coordinator for younger national teams over a decade ago, returns with a proven track record, having contributed to U19 World Cup and U18 FIBA Americas championship squads in 2013 and 2014. Bickerstaff, making his debut with USA Basketball, brings a fresh outlook, while Few returns to the program after a stint as an assistant under Steve Kerr during the last Olympic cycle.
Few, who is slated to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame next month, described serving with USA Basketball as "the highest calling for a basketball coach." His participation adds a layer of prestige to the staff, underscoring the honor of representing the United States on the international stage.
Grant Hill, the men’s national team managing director, highlighted the significance of continuity and collaboration within the coaching staff. "Continuity and collaboration are essential," Hill said, adding that the selected assistants embody the program’s commitment to sustained excellence.
