USA Basketball unveiled its coaching roster for the 2027 Basketball World Cup and the 2028 Olympics on Thursday, confirming Mark Daigneault, J.B. Bickerstaff and Mark Few as assistants. Erik Spoelstra Leads the Charge
For the first time, Erik Spoelstra will serve as the United States’ head coach, taking the reins of a program that has long been guided by a rotating cast of senior assistants. Spoelstra, best known for his championship pedigree with the Miami Heat, emphasized the value of an early start, saying the extra time will allow the staff to build chemistry and maintain a steady flow of communication.
Grant Hill, the managing director of the USA Basketball Men’s National Team, highlighted the strategic importance of continuity. ‘We want to ensure that the coaching philosophy remains cohesive from one cycle to the next,’ Hill said, noting that the early nomination process reflects a commitment to stability and collaborative planning.
A Blend of Legacy and New Blood
Mark Few brings a distinguished résumé that includes a recent induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame and a stint as an assistant during the previous Olympic cycle under Steve Kerr. His experience with youth national teams, where he captured a U19 World Cup title in 2013 and a U18 FIBA Americas crown in 2014, adds a developmental edge. Joining him are Daigneault and Bickerstaff, both making their debut on the senior national staff. Daigneault’s work with championship‑winning youth squads and Bickerstaff’s extensive coaching career provide complementary perspectives that Spoelstra believes will enrich the program.
