Donavan Worley Returns to East Columbus as New Basketball Coach

Alma mater appoints former Wolfpack standout to lead program, aiming to sustain recent success

East Columbus High School announced this week that Donavan Worley, a 2019 alumnus and former Athletic Director at Tar Heel Middle School, will take over as the varsity basketball coach, bringing a familiar and accomplished presence back to the program he once played for.

A Homecoming for a Rising Coach

Worley’s journey to the head coaching position has been marked by steady growth. After starring as a senior for East Columbus, where he averaged 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists, he pursued further education before returning to the school system as an administrator and coach.

Prior to his new role, Worley served as the head coach of the Whiteville High School junior varsity team, guiding the Wolfpack to a 36‑4 record and capturing two conference championships during the 2023‑2024 seasons. His success at the JV level demonstrated an ability to develop talent and maintain a competitive culture.

The team he now inherits comes off a strong finish, having secured the 1A Carolina Conference title in the most recent season. That recent triumph provides a solid foundation on which Worley hopes to build, blending his developmental approach with the expectations of a program accustomed to winning.

In a statement released to the local press, Worley expressed enthusiasm about returning to his alma mater. "I’m excited to come back to East Columbus and help shape a program that reflects the community’s passion for basketball," he said, adding that his goal is to sustain success while fostering growth both on and off the court.

The appointment signals a strategic move by the school board to leverage Worley’s deep roots and proven leadership. By entrusting a former player with the program’s future, East Columbus aims to reinforce continuity, instill confidence among players and families, and maintain the momentum generated by last season’s conference championship.
