The Hewlett-Woodmere Junior League all-star baseball team captured its first New York District 30 championship on June 28, defeating Freeport 7-0 at Baldwin Park. The victory secured the team’s spot in the Little League International Junior League tournament and marked the first district title for the league in the Williamsport tournament in many years.
Key contributions came from Jonah Brown, who pitched six shutout innings, and Jacob Cohen, who recorded a two-strikeout save and also played shortstop. Their performances helped the squad finish the tournament with a 4-1 record, having bested Baldwin twice and Freeport twice.
Manager Henry Cohen and assistant coach Jason Farber praised the players’ dedication, adaptability and sportsmanship. Henry Cohen, who has led the team for seven years while his own four sons have competed at various levels, highlighted the group’s strength in pitching, defense, hitting and base-running.
Unlike many rivals, the Hewlett-Woodmere squad drew most of its players from the local Little League rather than costly travel-ball programs, practicing at Hewlett Elementary School, Grant Park and the batting cages at Five Towns Mini Golf & Batting Range. The team also benefited from volunteer instruction by Hewlett High School coach Jake Passaretti.
The championship run required four wins, and after advancing through the district play the team moved on to the sectional competition, where it was eliminated by Franklin Square. Several players had to cut short sleepaway-camp vacations to attend games, underscoring their commitment.
A Community Celebrates
The achievement has sparked celebration across the community, with parents, classmates from the Hebrew Academy of Long Beach and local officials applauding the young athletes’ teamwork and perseverance. Families gathered at the ballpark, and local businesses displayed banners of support, reflecting the deep roots of the program in the Hewlett-Woodmere area.
