The Coastal Plain League, a 30‑year‑old summer collegiate wood‑bat circuit based in Durham, is set to field a team at Mooresville’s Moor Park after a multimillion‑dollar renovation of the stadium. The league, owned by Raleigh‑based Capitol Broadcasting Co., will join the 15‑team league that spans the Carolinas, Georgia and Virginia.
A Strategic Fit for a Growing Market
Commissioner Chip Allen said the town’s rapid growth and deep‑rooted baseball tradition make it an outstanding fit for the league. He added that the league topped other competitive bidders to secure the park and is finalizing an agreement with the town and Temerity Baseball LLC.
The move displaces the Mooresville Spinners, who have called Moor Park home for 11 seasons. The Spinners claim the town unfairly ejected them from the stadium, a dispute that could escalate to court. Temerity Baseball, which also owns the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers and the Greensboro Grasshoppers, will help operate the new franchise.
The Lake Norman region ranks among the fastest‑growing areas in North Carolina, and its passionate fan base has long supported baseball at every level. The league’s history of producing talent is reflected in the 212 players it has sent to the majors, including alumni such as Russell Wilson, Justin Verlander and Ryan Zimmerman.
Since its inception the league has drafted roughly 1,800 players, many of whom have gone on to MLB careers. Notable graduates include former NFL quarterback Russell Wilson, as well as hitters Mark Reynolds, Kevin Youkilis, Chris Taylor, Jake Cave, Alec Bohm and Chas McCormick, underscoring the circuit’s role as a proving ground for future professionals.
