A 58‑year‑old man from Tamaqua was taken into custody early Wednesday morning after a violent confrontation in an apartment on North Railroad Street. Police reports indicate that the dispute escalated quickly, prompting the suspect to wield a metal baseball bat.
According to investigators, the suspect, identified as Shannon M. Cara, struck his roommate twice in the right arm, causing a bleeding cut on the elbow. The victim managed to wrest the bat away, but both men fell to the floor during the struggle.
While on the ground, Cara allegedly continued the assault, delivering multiple punches to the victim’s face. The blows resulted in noticeable swelling above the victim’s right eye, prompting the injured party to leave the apartment to seek assistance.
After the victim exited the building, Cara locked the door and refused to answer knocks or take phone calls from responding officers. Emergency personnel transported the injured man to St. Luke’s Hospital in Coaldale for medical evaluation, and he later arranged alternative lodging for the night.
Legal Proceedings Underway
Charges of simple assault and harassment have been filed through the office of Magisterial District Judge Stephen J. Bayer. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 18, where further details of the case are expected to emerge.
