A Tribute to a Baseball Legend
Southern University's Board of Supervisors recently voted to christen the baseball field at Lee-Hines Stadium as "Roger Cador Field," a tribute to the coach who shaped the program for more than three decades.
Cador’s 33‑year tenure produced 14 conference titles, ten All‑American players and a pipeline that delivered 62 athletes to the Major League Baseball draft, cementing his legacy as one of the most influential figures in the university’s sports history.
The renaming ceremony, attended by alumni, current players and university leaders, underscored the deep respect the institution holds for Cador, whose influence extended beyond the diamond to mentorship and community outreach.
In parallel, the board approved contract extensions for Head Baseball Coach Christopher Crenshaw, now set to lead the program through June 30, 2029, and Head Women’s Basketball Coach Carlos Funchess, whose agreement runs through 2033 and includes a $20,000 annual salary increase.
These moves reflect a strategic commitment to stability and growth within the athletics department, aiming to attract top talent, enhance recruiting pipelines and reinforce the university’s competitive edge in both baseball and women’s basketball.
A New Era for Southern Athletics
The combined honors and contract assurances mark a pivotal moment for Southern University, signaling confidence in its coaching leadership and a forward‑looking vision for its athletic programs.
