The Lynbrook Roller Hockey League in Greis Park is set to receive an $850,000 federal grant to build an all‑weather canopy that will make the rink usable throughout the year. The funding, secured by U.S. Representative Laura Gillen, aims to expand recreational opportunities and strengthen community connections.
The canopy will shield players from sun, rain and snow, creating more consistent scheduling and opening the door to new programs. Village officials say the project is part of a broader effort to deepen community ties, noting that the rink already serves as a safe gathering place for children across the area.
With reliable access, participants can train without traveling to neighboring towns, and the league can host more events throughout the year. "Year‑round availability will help players improve and keep families engaged right here in Lynbrook," said Owen Burkhart, a longtime member of the league.
The village is also pursuing additional public and private partnerships to fund a partially enclosed structure, aiming to complete the project within the next two years. This collaborative approach reflects a growing recognition of community sports facilities as vital infrastructure.
A canopy for all seasons
The planned canopy will cover the entire rink, providing protection from the elements while preserving an open feel. By mitigating weather‑related cancellations, the league expects to attract more players, increase youth participation, and foster a stronger sense of belonging among families.
Construction is slated to begin later this year, with completion targeted for early 2026. Once finished, the rink will be ready for winter leagues and summer tournaments alike, ensuring that hockey remains a year‑round staple for the community.
