A New Era for Community Hockey
U.S. Representative Laura Gillen announced that the Lynbrook Roller Hockey League will receive an $850,000 federal grant to construct an all‑weather canopy over the Greis Park rink. The funding, championed by the congresswoman, aims to transform the facility into a year‑round hub for sport and recreation.
The canopy will shield players from sun, rain and snow, allowing games and practices to proceed regardless of the forecast. By eliminating weather‑related cancellations, the league can schedule more programs, attract new participants and offer a stable environment for families who rely on the rink as a safe gathering place.
Lynbrook Police Chief Brian Paladino, who also serves as president of the Roller Hockey League, first proposed the canopy concept. His vision, supported by longtime community advocate Owen Burkhart and donor Don Burkhart, emphasizes both safety and the broader social benefits of a vibrant, accessible sports venue.
The $850,000 grant covers roughly half of the estimated $1.7 million project cost. Village officials are now pursuing additional public and private partnerships to fund the remaining expenses and to develop a partially enclosed structure that could further enhance comfort during extreme weather.
Construction is slated to begin once the federal funding process and required environmental reviews are completed, with officials projecting completion within the next two years. Once finished, the upgraded rink will stand as a lasting testament to the power of community‑driven initiatives and federal support in revitalizing public recreational spaces.
