A championship to remember
The Barren County 12U baseball team entered the West Kentucky Cal Ripken State Tournament Major 70 as a dark horse, but quickly turned expectations into reality.
Coached by Ben Wood and supported by assistants Andy Devasher and Austin Guarino, the squad swept through pool play, dispatching Cumberland County 9‑3 and Franklin‑Simpson 12‑2 to finish atop their group.
The tournament format shifted to Elizabethtown for bracket action, where Barren County faced Russell County and posted a 10‑4 win that set up a rematch with Cumberland County in the championship.
In a back‑and‑forth final, the Barren County nine edged Cumberland County 13‑12, a score that left fans on the edge of their seats and cemented the team’s state‑championship status.
Beyond the scoreboard, the victory underscores the effectiveness of Wood’s leadership and the collaborative effort of his assistants, who have helped nurture a competitive and resilient roster.
Looking toward the regional tournament
With the state title secured, the team now turns its attention to the Cal Ripken Ohio Valley Regional Tournament, where they will meet some of the region’s top 12‑year‑old talent.
The upcoming regional event promises new challenges, but the players and coaching staff remain confident that the experience gained in Elizabethtown will serve them well on the next stage.
