Silver's Remarks on WNBA Controversies
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver addressed the growing political narrative surrounding WNBA star Caitlin Clark during a recent press conference, asserting that the league’s focus should remain on her development and the broader growth of women’s basketball.
Silver noted that Clark’s emergence has attracted new viewers, including young girls, women and even men, to the sport, but stressed that the conversation should not be reduced to officiating disputes.
The controversy intensified after a June 22 game in which Clark was involved in two contentious moments, one of which saw Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas place her fist on Clark’s throat. The league later retroactively upgraded the play to a Flagrant 2 foul and suspended Thomas for a single game, a decision that sparked heated debate.
While Silver declined to confirm reports that he had influenced the suspension of Thomas, he emphasized that the league’s officiating standards are under continuous review and that improvements are underway across both the WNBA and the NBA.
He also expressed concern over the online abuse directed at Thomas, describing the death threats as unacceptable and urging fans to keep the dialogue respectful.
Concluding his remarks, Silver praised Cathy Engelbert’s leadership of the WNBA and affirmed his satisfaction with the league’s current trajectory, while reiterating that the priority remains the talent and progress of players like Clark.
