Rutgers Secures Italian Forward Diego Garavaglia
Rutgers University announced Tuesday that it has officially signed Italian forward Diego Garavaglia, a 6‑foot‑7 athlete celebrated for his defensive intensity and scoring efficiency.
Garavaglia spent the last two seasons competing in the German Bundesliga before joining the Scarlet Knights, bringing a blend of size, agility, and polished fundamentals to the program.
International Experience and Interest
On the world stage he helped Italy finish third at the FIBA EuroBasket, where he averaged 14.3 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, numbers that attracted attention from several power‑programs, including Duke, after a breakout performance at the Basketball Without Borders camp.
Coach Steve Pikiell, who has guided the program to its most successful era, said the recruit’s versatility and work ethic fit perfectly with the team’s philosophy, noting that Garavaglia can operate equally at the three or the four position.
The decision to commit to Rutgers was influenced as much by the campus atmosphere as by personal connections; Garavaglia cited the positive feedback he received from fellow Italian player Dorin Buca and the promise of a supportive environment under Pikiell.
Administrators at Rutgers University expressed confidence that the new addition will strengthen the Big Ten roster and contribute to the program’s continued ascent.
