A rink born of imagination
Amanda Vernaci, a DIY content creator, decided to give her two young sons a place where their play could become a real ice surface. Over three months she turned a plain basement into a fully‑featured hockey rink, investing roughly $17,000 in the transformation.
The project began with simple carpet games but quickly evolved into a sophisticated arena. Synthetic ice panels were installed on the floor, and a wall of polycarbonate glass was added to mimic the look and feel of a professional rink.
Inspired by the family's love of sport and the boys' admiration for the Detroit Red Wings, the finished rink measures about 25 feet by 15 feet. The synthetic ice cost roughly $2,700, while the polycarbonate enclosure ran close to $5,200.
Vernaci documents every expense on Instagram, posting detailed cost breakdowns and material lists so that other parents can gauge what it takes to build a similar space. Her transparent approach has turned the project into a popular tutorial for DIY sports enthusiasts.
Although some have questioned how a customized basement might affect the home's resale value, Vernaci says the true return lies elsewhere. She wants to create lasting memories and teach her children the value of dedication and hard work.
