Late June saw the fields at Treadwell Park come alive with the sounds of sticks clacking and enthusiastic shouts as the Newtown Field Hockey Camp kicked off under the guidance of Coach Ellen Goyda.
The camp, designed for girls between five and fourteen, was staffed by a blend of college‑bound athletes and current Newtown High School players, all eager to share their love of the game.
Campers spent each day working on stick handling, strategic play and overall confidence, with the explicit goal that every participant would master at least one new skill before the session ended.
For the counselors, the experience proved as instructive as it was rewarding; they reported gaining a deeper appreciation for focus, active listening and the nuances of coaching youth.
A Legacy of Giving Back
Megan Goyda, who now serves as head coach for the NHS varsity team, recalls attending the same camp as a youngster with her sister Katie, the junior varsity coach. Their return as counselors reflects a commitment to nurture the next wave of talent and to give back to the community that once supported them.
