A New Chapter for Kentucky Basketball
At the Joe Craft Center in Lexington, Kentucky’s basketball program staged its first public scrimmage of the preseason, pitting the university’s emerging roster against an alumni squad known as La Familia.
Coached by Mark Pope, now in his third year at the helm, the young Cats seized a 31‑19 win, showcasing a blend of youthful energy and disciplined execution that left observers optimistic about the upcoming season.
The game’s key moments were quickly shared on Kentucky’s official social channels, where short video clips captured fast‑break dunks and tight defensive stops, giving fans a first look at Pope’s tactical adjustments.
La Familia, organized under the guidance of former Wildcats stalwart Jon Hood and general manager Twany Beckham, will contest a three‑game series against The Ville in the coming weeks. The alumni team’s lineup includes veteran presence from former Kentucky standouts such as Willie Cauley‑Stein, Andrew Harrison and Kahlil Whitney, as well as other former Wildcats including Archie Goodwin, DeAndre Liggins, Marcus Lee, James Mainor‑Bell, Chris Coffey and Darryl Morsell.
While the scrimmage was primarily a developmental exercise, the performance underscores Pope’s intent to blend fresh talent with seasoned veterans, a strategy that could reshape the team’s identity as it moves toward the regular season.
