Former Michigan State hockey captain Matt Basgall has agreed to a one‑year professional deal with the San Diego Gulls, the AHL affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks.
The agreement marks the culmination of a rapid rise for the 23‑year‑old defenseman, who first stepped onto the Gulls’ roster in April under an amateur‑tryout contract and immediately began to make an impression.
In four regular‑season appearances he logged a goal, an assist and a plus‑six rating, showcasing the defensive reliability that earned him Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors during his senior year at Michigan State.
College pedigree and accolades
During his collegiate career Basgall appeared in all 150 games under coach Adam Nightingale, contributing 20 points — four goals and 16 assists — while maintaining a plus‑16 rating. His defensive excellence helped the Spartans capture three Big Ten regular‑season titles and two tournament championships, cementing his status as one of the program’s most consistent blueliners.
Basgall’s journey to the professional ranks was not a straight path. Before arriving in East Lansing he honed his skills in the United States Hockey League with Omaha and Tri‑City, where he amassed 67 career points and a plus‑31 rating across two seasons.
His signing follows the recent professional contracts of fellow undrafted Spartans Daniel Russell and Tiernan Shoudy, making Basgall the third and final member of that trio to turn pro. The Gulls have also inked six other players to one‑year agreements, underscoring a busy offseason for the franchise.
