Council Prioritizes Fire Support and Court Revitalization
During a recent session, the Arcata City Council examined a suite of initiatives that included new development fees designed to bolster the Arcata Fire District, a draft policy governing city employees' use of artificial intelligence, and a proposal to designate a specific census tract as an Opportunity Zone to stimulate investment in lower‑income neighborhoods.
In a unanimous vote, the council allocated $115,319 for the renovation of the Redwood Park basketball court, the only publicly accessible full‑court facility in the city, earmarking funds for resurfacing, new hoops, net replacements and improved drainage.
The council also voted to increase funding for the Reconnect Arcata project, a plan aimed at creating seamless, car‑free pedestrian routes that connect the city’s eastern and western halves and enhance overall mobility.
While expressing enthusiasm for the prospective development fees — levied according to project type and directed toward the fire district’s expanding services — members noted that concrete implementation details remain pending and will be refined at a future meeting.
The AI policy resolution, which seeks to curb the use of AI‑generated material for public‑facing communications and to address concerns from artists and environmental advocates, will be revisited at the next meeting with stricter language.
