During the recent Peach Jam in Augusta, Georgia, Vanderbilt head coach Mark Byington, assistant coach Rodney Terry and recruiting director Chad Myers were spotted in the stands, underscoring the Commodores’ focus on a coveted five‑star prospect.
Gabe Nesmith, a recruit ranked as Vanderbilt’s highest‑rated commit since the days of Darius Garland and Simi Shittu, emphasized that feeling wanted and believed in by his coach was a cornerstone of his decision‑making process.
Through three games at the event, Nesmith posted averages of 10.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists, while shooting 31.6 percent from the field and 23.5 percent from three‑point range. His eight assists on Wednesday and five on Tuesday highlighted a playmaking side that has surprised observers.
Efficiency remains a work in progress; he has turned the ball over four times in two games and shot below 35 percent overall. Yet his physical frame, athleticism and defensive activity — three steals and a block in three contests — suggest a player whose body is poised to translate quickly to the SEC.
The Commodores’ staff appears encouraged by Nesmith’s blend of size, skill and basketball IQ. If his shooting improves and his role clarifies, he could become a pivotal piece in Vanderbilt’s push to return to national relevance.
