The 2026 Major League Baseball draft marked a turning point for the Stony Brook University baseball program, as two of its recent standouts began their professional journeys.
Micah Worley’s Draft Journey
Micah Worley, a right‑handed pitcher from Missouri, was selected in the sixth round by the Arizona Diamondbacks, capping a college career that included a 3.12 earned run average and a 6‑5 record over 69.1 innings. He earned All‑CAA Honorable Mention and was named CAA Pitcher of the Week twice, finishing second in the conference with 93 strikeouts.
Scott Gell’s Undrafted Path
Outfielder Scott Gell, a Connecticut native, signed as an undrafted free agent with the San Francisco Giants after setting career highs with 25 runs scored, 40 hits, 10 doubles, three home runs and 35 RBI. He also posted a .303 batting average and a .377 on‑base percentage, earning CSC Academic All‑District honors for his performance in the classroom.
Their signings represent the first draft selections for a Stony Brook player since 2019, underscoring the program’s growing pipeline to the majors. Both athletes join professional organizations that are part of the broader MLB ecosystem, including the Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Francisco Giants, while the Los Angeles Angels also remain a notable presence in the league.
