A Freshman’s Rise
During an open practice session at the Purcell Pavilion, Notre Dame’s newest freshman, Jaci Abii, caught the eye of coaches and spectators alike. The 6‑foot‑2 forward from Texas moved with poise, threading together plays that highlighted her scoring touch both inside the paint and on the perimeter.
Head coach Niele Ivey was quick to laud the newcomer, noting that Abii’s skill set mirrors that of versatile star Jackie Young. “She can slide into the post, pull up for a mid‑range jumper, or stretch the defense as a wing,” Ivey said, emphasizing the flexibility that could reshape the Irish’s lineup.
Abii’s integration into the squad extends beyond the court. She has quickly formed a close rapport with graduate transfer Madison St. Rose and with senior standout Hannah Hidalgo, describing their relationship as akin to that of a young aunt who both challenges and supports her. “Hannah pushes me to be better every day, and I’m grateful for her mentorship,” Abii remarked.
The freshman class, described by coaches as ‘big’ in both size and personality, has bonded rapidly off the court, sharing meals, study sessions, and community outreach activities. This camaraderie, Abii says, has accelerated her adjustment to the collegiate rhythm.
Overcoming Adversity
Just months ago, Abii endured a torn left ACL that threatened to derail her debut. Yet the rehabilitation process has been marked by steady progress, and she now feels physically ready to contribute. “The work has been grueling, but every drill feels like a step closer to the court,” she noted.
Looking ahead, the Irish anticipate Abii’s involvement in the season opener against Villanova, where she could earn a starting spot. Her blend of size, skill, and basketball IQ positions her as a potential catalyst for a team eyeing a deep run in the conference tournament.
