A Revamped Calendar for a New Era
The National Hockey League has released its 2026‑27 schedule, marking the first time in more than three decades that each franchise will play 84 games. The season opens on September 29, about a week earlier than in recent years, and will run through April 10, when all 32 clubs take the ice simultaneously.
To accommodate the extra games, the league has added two additional divisional matchups for every team, heightening regional rivalries and providing more opportunities for fans to see familiar opponents. A steady stream of Monday matinee contests has also been scheduled to cater to European audiences, ensuring that viewers across the Atlantic can tune in during convenient local times.
Opening night will feature a ceremonial moment as the Carolina Hurricanes raise their Stanley Cup banner against the Florida Panthers, setting a dramatic tone for the campaign. The schedule also includes a Heritage Classic in Winnipeg on October 25, where the Montreal Canadiens will meet the host Jets in a celebration of Canada’s outdoor hockey tradition.
International play will continue with a two‑game series in Helsinki, Finland, on November 12 and 14, where the Hurricanes and Seattle Kraken will face off on European ice. Later in the month, the Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers will meet for the first time, while the Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks and New York Rangers each play their 7,000th regular‑season game in early December.
The league will also showcase a series of high‑profile matchups, including a first‑ever outdoor game for the Utah Mammoth on December 31 in Salt Lake City, and a Stadium Series at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on February 20. The NHL All‑Star Weekend is set for Long Island on February 5 and 6, promising a weekend of fan‑focused activities and exhibition games.
Key player returns will add extra intrigue throughout the season. Sergei Bobrovsky will return to Florida to play against the Panthers on March 6, John Carlson will face his former team in Washington, D.C., on March 15, and Alex Tuch will make his debut against the Buffalo Sabres on March 18 after being traded to the Washington Capitals.
The season will culminate on April 10, when every one of the 32 teams takes the ice, delivering a final day of drama that will determine playoff positioning and leave fans eager for the postseason. With a blend of tradition, new venues and heightened competition, the 2026‑27 schedule promises a year of unforgettable moments for hockey enthusiasts worldwide.
