A Season Interrupted
Maddy McDaniel, a junior guard who helped shape South Carolina’s backcourt last season, announced that she will step away from the program to prioritize her mental and emotional well‑being.
Coach Dawn Staley praised the decision, saying that the health of her players always comes first and that the team will rally around McDaniel’s choice.
During her sophomore year, McDaniel appeared in 33 of the Gamecocks’ 40 contests, logging an average of 19.7 minutes per game and contributing 4.3 points and 2.7 assists while shooting 33 percent from beyond the arc.
Her departure leaves a void at point guard, as she was the only true floor‑general returning, forcing South Carolina to reshuffle its backcourt rotation ahead of the new campaign.
The roster still boasts strong frontcourt depth, with several key big men set to return and a highly touted recruit set to join the lineup, giving the team balance despite the loss of a primary guard.
The Gamecocks will open the 2026‑27 season on November 2 in Paris, facing Brenda Frese’s Maryland Terrapins in a highly anticipated matchup that will also mark the team’s first game on European soil.
Staley’s program, a powerhouse that has captured three national championships and reached the Final Four in each of the past six seasons, now looks to maintain its tradition of excellence while navigating this transition.
