A Legacy Honored on the Diamond
The Southern University Board of Supervisors is set to convene this Friday at 9 a.m. inside the SUNO Museum of Art in New Orleans, where members will consider a proposal to christen the baseball field at Lee‑Hines Stadium in honor of the late Roger Cador.
Cador, who steered the program for three decades before retiring in 2017, leaves behind a storied legacy marked by 14 conference championships and a career record that places him among the most victorious coaches in the school's history.
His influence extended beyond the diamond, producing ten All‑American athletes and shepherding 62 players into the Major League Baseball draft, a testament to his ability to develop talent at the highest level.
In addition to the naming ceremony, the board will vote on contract extensions for Head Baseball Coach Christopher Crenshaw, who is slated to remain at the helm through June 30, 2029, and Head Women's Basketball Coach Carlos Funchess, whose renewed agreement runs through 2033 and includes a $20,000 annual salary increment.
The decisions reflect a broader commitment to continuity and excellence within Southern University's athletic departments, underscoring the institution's dedication to rewarding proven leadership while preserving the traditions that have defined its sports programs for generations.
