The historic town hall was filled with applause as Steve Cotterill, the veteran manager of Cheltenham Town FC, was presented with the Freedom of the Borough of Cheltenham, the most prestigious accolade the town bestows.
Council leader Rowena Hay highlighted that the award reflects the very best of Cheltenham, recognizing individuals who have significantly enhanced the town’s standing through sport, community service, and leadership.
In his acceptance speech, Cotterill urged the next generation to ‘keep dreaming’, emphasizing that perseverance and hard work can turn a childhood love of football into a lasting legacy.
He took the opportunity to thank his family, the club’s board, and the thousands of supporters whose encouragement had carried him through decades of managerial challenges.
Reflecting on his early days, Cotterill recalled kicking a ball around Elmfield Park as a boy, a memory that resurfaced whenever he reviewed old school reports that repeatedly noted his single‑minded passion for the game.
A petition signed by more than 1,300 residents had called for the honor, underscoring the deep appreciation the community holds for the man who led the club to three promotions and an FA Trophy triumph.
The ceremony also honored Clare Seed and Dave Bath for their own contributions to the borough, illustrating the council’s commitment to celebrating local heroes across different fields.
A Legacy of Leadership
Cotterill’s career spans more than two decades, during which he managed nine clubs including Wimbledon, Brighton & Hove Albion, and AFC Bournemouth, each benefiting from his pragmatic approach and motivational ethos.
He guided Cheltenham Town to safety with five games remaining, a testament to his tactical acumen and ability to rally a squad under pressure.
