Newton's baseball coach Darin Tisdale is confronting a significant transition as the Cardinals say goodbye to seniors Gabe Otto and Lane Rozendaal, who together accounted for a disproportionate share of the team's production.
A heavy loss for the lineup
Otto and Rozendaal together supplied 61 of the team's 228 hits, 27 of the 117 runs batted in and 69 of the 212 innings pitched, while also contributing six of the thirteen wins. Their impact on the field was far larger than the roughly 22% of the lineup they occupied most games.
Rozendaal has confirmed that he will not continue playing baseball, ending his collegiate career. Otto, meanwhile, is exploring the possibility of playing at Kirksville Community College, where he also plans to pursue a teaching degree.
Looking ahead
Tisdale emphasized that the program will rely on younger players to fill the void, while also noting that Otto has expressed interest in returning to Newton next season to coach the freshman team. The coach remains optimistic that the experience gained by the departing seniors will help shape a competitive future for the Cardinals.
