The Detroit Lions announced that both starting safeties, Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph, and newly signed tight end Tyler Conklin, have been placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list as the team convenes for training camp. The move reflects ongoing recovery efforts after each player encountered significant injuries during the previous season.
Branch’s campaign was cut short in Week 14 when a torn Achilles required surgery, ending his 2025 campaign prematurely. Prior to the injury he had compiled 75 tackles and contributed nine passes defended, establishing himself as a central figure in the secondary.
Joseph, meanwhile, has been limited by a knee issue that sidelined him for much of the 2025 season. He managed three interceptions and four passes defended across six appearances, but his availability was further compromised by a history of missed games, including an 11‑game stretch last year.
Conklin, who joined the Lions this offseason, missed several OTAs with an undisclosed injury, raising questions about his readiness for the upcoming schedule.
Implications of the PUP Designation
All three athletes remain eligible to be removed from the PUP list once camp progresses, but if they begin the regular season on it they must sit out at least four games before rejoining the active roster. This rule adds a strategic layer to the Lions’ early‑season planning, as the coaching staff evaluates how quickly each player can return to full health.
