Kegan Richards, a former basketball standout who grew up in the Virgin Islands, has been appointed head coach of the Benedictine Cadets program, taking over a team that has already begun to generate buzz.
His basketball journey started at John Wood Community College in Illinois, where he became the program’s all‑time leader in assists before moving on to Armstrong State in Savannah. There he continued to develop his skills while coaching youth basketball with the Savannah Pit Bulls, experiences that have shaped his coaching philosophy.
After two years as an assistant under Frank Williams at Benedictine, Richards succeeded in securing the top job, working alongside Vladimir De Cardenas, a faculty member who will help guide the Cadets' strategy on the court.
High Hopes for a Championship Run
The new head coach inherits a roster brimming with talent, highlighted by standout sophomore guard Kyree Richards, who averaged 16.1 points per game as a freshman, and veterans such as Ca'Ron Hall and Gage Copeland.
Richards says the team's experienced players and a strong incoming class give him high expectations for a run at a state championship, and he believes the chemistry between father and son will not add drama but rather strengthen their on‑court partnership.
Reflecting on his mentorship under Williams, Richards notes that the lessons learned over the past two years have prepared him to lead the Cadets with confidence and a clear vision for success.
