Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC) has made a historic hire, naming Tom Minnick as its first head football coach. The appointment marks the beginning of an intercollegiate football program scheduled to debut in the fall of 2027, a move that aligns with the school’s broader mission of integrating athletics with academic excellence.

The Blue Storm will call the Southwestern Illinois Justice and Workforce Development Campus on Main Street home. Originally constructed in the 1930s as a Works Progress Administration project for Belleville Township High School, the facility has recently received a $543,000 investment to replace its turf with a state‑of‑the‑art artificial surface, ensuring a modern playing environment for the inaugural season.
Financial Foundations and Facility Use
Launching a football program carries a significant financial footprint. Initial capital outlay is projected between $1 million and $2 million, covering equipment, staffing, and facility upgrades. Annual operating costs are estimated at $750,000 to $1 million. These figures reflect the college’s ability to leverage existing infrastructure — including a stadium and student dormitories — while still meeting the upfront demands of a full‑scale intercollegiate program.
Minnick will spend the coming year assembling a coaching staff, recruiting student‑athletes, and establishing the program’s structural framework. The initiative also benefits from relationships with nearby institutions such as Garden City Community College, Lindenwood University‑Belleville, and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, positioning SWIC within a regional network of athletic and academic collaboration.
