Gardner-Webb University announced today that Brett Carey has been named its new associate head coach for the men's basketball program, a move that underscores the program's ambition to return to national relevance.
A native of Lincolnton, North Carolina, Carey brings a decade-long résumé that spans some of the most competitive mid-major conferences, having served as an assistant or defensive coordinator at UNC Charlotte, Campbell University, Middle Tennessee State, Austin Peay, Indiana State and UNC Asheville.
At Campbell, his defensive schemes helped the team climb to the top of national rankings for opponent three-point percentage and scoring margin, while he mentored All-CAA forward Colby Duggan and Defensive Player of the Year Nolan Dorsey.
His season at Middle Tennessee State last year featured a reunion with veteran Nick McDevitt, a partnership that produced a 21-point upset over Indiana and highlighted his knack for blending seasoned insight with fresh tactics.
A Coach With a Proven Track Record
Carey’s career is marked by a consistent ability to develop talent that competes at the highest levels of collegiate basketball, a skill that aligns perfectly with Gardner-Webb’s vision of revitalizing its program.
Fans can expect a renewed emphasis on disciplined defense, three-point shooting efficiency and player development as the Runnin’ Bulldogs prepare for the upcoming season under Carey’s guidance.
