A New Chapter for American 3×3 Basketball
At the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, a select group of basketball athletes are spending weeks immersed in 3×3 competition, a fast‑growing half‑court format that is reshaping how the sport is played and perceived.
Max Murrell describes the format as “really fast and different,” while former NBA guard Briante Weber notes the relentless tempo and the need to adapt his conditioning. Malik Hluchoweckyj, who has spent more than four years on the 3×3 circuit, adds that the game’s heightened physicality forces players to adjust their style on the fly.
The camp blends seasoned 3×3 squads with developmental players who view the experience as a crucial stepping stone toward national team selection and international exposure. Participants cite the opportunity to extend their careers and represent the United States as a primary motivator.
USA Basketball is partnering with the training center to provide coaching, facilities, and competitive matchups, underscoring the organization’s commitment to the discipline. The competition will run from Monday through July 31, offering a clear pathway for athletes to earn a spot on Team USA.
Beyond the immediate tournament, the camp serves as a laboratory for innovation in 3×3 strategy and a showcase for the sport’s growing popularity across the United States. For many, the experience is about more than medals; it is about helping shape the future of basketball in the country.
