Brooklyn’s Trans Girl Baseball Initiative
In April 2023, Lilah Maravi launched a monthly pickup baseball series for trans women in Brooklyn, turning East River Park into a weekly sanctuary where the sound of a bat hitting a ball replaces the silence of exclusion.
The league was born from personal histories of dysphoria and early love for the game, as participants like Alexandra Tey, Clara Hall, Chelsea Neeler, Elle Yung, Taylor Mazzocchi, Charlie Baker and Raidel Martínez recount how childhood memories of backyard games faded when gender identity became a source of conflict.
Today the games welcome players of every skill level, from novices who have never held a glove to former Little League standouts, all united by the simple goal of reconnecting with their bodies and each other through a sport that once felt inaccessible.
Shared equipment, including donated helmets and bats, circulates among the group, reinforcing a culture of mutual support. Stories from the field reveal moments of unexpected joy, such as a first successful swing after years of avoidance, and the laughter that follows a well‑timed double play.
The model has spread beyond Brooklyn, inspiring similar collectives in Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Pittsburgh, and sparking conversations about inclusive recreation in universities and community centers. Organizers are now planning to replicate the format in the Netherlands, expanding the reach of a movement that began with a single park game.
Beyond the diamond, the initiative underscores a broader cultural shift: trans women are reclaiming spaces historically closed to them, and in doing so, they are reshaping the narrative around sport, identity, and belonging.
