Jake McCoy opts for college over professional contract
Left‑handed pitcher Jake McCoy, a standout from South Carolina, has elected to forgo a signing bonus with the Toronto Blue Jays and will instead join the Tennessee Volunteers for the upcoming season.
The Blue Jays selected McCoy in the 18th round of the 2026 MLB Draft, but the pitcher decided that a full year of college baseball would give him the best platform to elevate his draft stock.
McCoy’s junior season was lost to Tommy John surgery, a setback that has become a common rite of passage for many high‑profile prospects.
During his sophomore year in 2025 he logged a 4‑5 record with a 6.90 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP across 14 starts, showcasing an upper‑90s fastball that scouts have described as elite.
A competitive rotation ahead
At Tennessee, McCoy will battle for a weekend starting spot alongside returning ace Landon Mack and rising sophomore Cam Appenzeller. The Volunteers also bolstered their staff with transfers Parker Detmers, Brody Trosclair, Ricky Ojeda and Hayden Simmerson, adding depth and experience.
Coach Will Bolt has emphasized that the rotation will be among the most talented in the SEC, and McCoy’s left‑handedness is viewed as a strategic asset against both right‑ and left‑handed hitters.
If he can stay healthy and replicate his sophomore performance, McCoy could see his draft projection climb well beyond the 18th‑round slot that the Blue Jays originally assigned him.
