A New Chapter for Local Football
The merger of the Blooming Prairie and Hayfield football programs marks a decisive response to dwindling participation across both schools, a move driven by the need to preserve competitive varsity football in the region.
Under the new arrangement, the combined squad will compete in Class AA this season, a step up that reflects both the expanded talent pool and the ambition to remain competitive at a higher level of play.
Blooming Prairie entered the previous season with a 2‑7 record, their first losing campaign since 2004, while Hayfield posted a 1‑8 slate, a stark contrast to their 4‑5 winning season in 2014.
Both schools will be led on the sidelines by their current head coaches, Chad Gimbel of Blooming Prairie and Derrick Thompson of Hayfield, who will share oversight of the joint team and coordinate practice schedules.
Community leaders hope the collaboration will reverse enrollment decline and rekindle interest in the sport, pointing to the schools’ past successes — Blooming Prairie’s 2019 Class A state title and their 2020 contention — as proof of what can be achieved when resources are pooled.
As the new team takes the field, the merger stands as a pragmatic solution to a shared challenge, blending tradition with a forward‑looking vision for high school athletics in the region.
