The Gillion Academy, a high school basketball program based in Northern Virginia, has emerged as one of the most talked‑about teams in the country. Founded by the Gillion brothers, the school pairs elite basketball development with a strong academic curriculum, creating a distinctive pathway for its student‑athletes.
A Distinctive Educational‑Athletic Model
Darrance Gillion, who relocated to Northern Virginia in 2014, began assembling a local basketball network that would eventually become the academy’s foundation. Inspired by the documentary *Waiting for Superman* and during his tenure at The SEED Public Charter School of Washington, DC, he envisioned an institution that could marry athletic excellence with scholarly achievement. His vision attracted family members and former colleagues, who helped shape the school’s philosophy and structure.
The recruitment drive extended beyond players; the brothers brought in relatives and alumni from their former Team Breakdown program in Florida. Kenny Gillion, known for building a powerhouse at West Oaks, joined as a lead coach, while JP Gajardo, a longtime West Oaks assistant, took on a similar role. Their combined experience infused the new program with a deep reservoir of basketball knowledge and mentorship.
The academy opened its doors in the fall of 2024 with just 24 students, a modest beginning that quickly proved its appeal. In its inaugural season the team captured national attention by advancing to the Elite Eight of the Grind Session World Championships. The early success set the stage for a growing roster and a expanding footprint across the United States.
Seniors from the first graduating class have already secured spots in summer school programs at a variety of colleges. Jaden Joseph, one of the standout prospects, elected to play at Florida A&M University, citing head coach Charlie Ward as a personal role model. Other alumni have committed to institutions ranging from Samford University in Alabama to the University of Miami in Florida, underscoring the academy’s national reach.
Beyond the court, the Gillion Academy’s model has sparked collaborations with a host of educational institutions, including West Oaks Academy, Miami Senior High School, and several universities such as the University of Pennsylvania and Florida State University. These partnerships not only broaden academic opportunities for players but also reinforce the academy’s commitment to developing well‑rounded citizens.
