The 2026 Mississippi high school football season is poised to kick off, and the Clarion Ledger has already begun spotlighting the players who could shape the defensive backfield.
Jaylin Andrews from Hattiesburg posted 49 tackles and two interceptions last year, drawing interest from Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Alabama and Auburn, while Josiah Barnes of Oak Grove compiled 81 tackles, seven tackles for loss, two sacks and an interception, earning a commitment to Troy.
Trae'kerrion Collins of Terry recorded 62 tackles, five interceptions and two tackles for loss, pledging to Mississippi State, and Nathan Cornelison from Tupelo Christian Prep added 63 total tackles, seven interceptions and three pass breakups.
Brayden Gates of Amory contributed 55 tackles, nine for loss, 11 pass breakups and an interception, attracting offers from Ole Miss and Jackson State, while Jamiyon Gray of Mize was named the MAC 2A defensive player of the year after 96 tackles, 17 for loss, 11 sacks and two interceptions.
Ashton Grice from Baldwyn logged 39 tackles, 34 solo, nine interceptions for 124 return yards and eight pass breakups, and Keontae Griffis from Pontotoc recorded 65 tackles with 15 for loss and an interception.
Other contributors include Herrin Goodman of Jackson Prep with 91 tackles, Brandon Laneaux from Pass Christian with 87 tackles and five interceptions, and Tanner Hardy of Brookhaven who helped his team to an MHSAA 5A title and earned offers from Jackson State, South Alabama and Arkansas State.
The commitments and offers reflect a competitive landscape, as players like Stanley Peters Jr. of Seminary will head to Arkansas, Kamron Roberts of Brandon eyes Ole Miss, Duke and Arkansas, and Pasario Self of Cleveland Central is headed to Jackson State.
With a deep pool of talent across the state, the upcoming season promises intense competition and a showcase of future collegiate stars, making the 2026 defensive backfield one of the most anticipated in recent memory.
