His son, Matt Lombardi, serves as the team’s quarterbacks coach, tying the family’s fortunes closely to the program’s on‑field direction.
The timing of the leave coincides with Belichick’s preparation for his second season, a campaign that ended last year with a 4‑8 record for the Tar Heels.
