Florida State’s offensive line coach Herb Hand finds himself at the center of a pivotal rebuilding effort as the Seminoles prepare for the upcoming season.
A blend of experience and fresh talent
The program has assembled a mix of veteran transfers and younger players whose eligibility stretches past the 2026 campaign, creating a unique opportunity to forge a durable front.
Among the newcomers, Xavier Chaplin brings four years of experience and 37 career starts at left tackle, while Nate Pabst offers versatility with 38 starts across multiple positions.
Key pieces in the puzzle
Andre' Otto is slated to re-enter the starting lineup after a solid fourth season, and Bradyn Welch-Joiner, now in his third school, has already logged 17 starts at left guard and center. Chimdia Nwaiwu, the most intriguing transfer portal addition, arrives with elite athleticism and is expected to man the right tackle spot, a position that could unlock greater flexibility for the unit.
Coach Hand notes that the left side of the line appears locked in, but the right side remains a work in progress. The staff is optimistic that Nwaiwu’s development will provide the necessary stability to shift pieces as needed.
Looking ahead
With a core that can contribute immediately and also grow together, the Seminoles hope to stay slightly ahead of schedule compared to the previous year. The blend of seasoned transfers and promising underclassmen may well define the next chapter of Florida State’s offensive identity.
