Jimmie Williams, a 6‑5 guard from Solon, Ohio, grew up dreaming of wearing the scarlet and gray. After stints at Duquesne, Wallace State Community College and the University of South Florida, the Ohio native has returned to his home state to join the Ohio State men’s basketball program.
The Road to Ohio State
Williams’ basketball odyssey began on the courts of Solon High School, where he graduated in 2021. He then navigated a series of moves — spending a year at a prep school, a walk‑on season at a Division II institution, and a standout two‑year run at Wallace State, where he earned NJCAA All‑American honors after averaging 22.5 points per game.
A Homecoming in the Big Ten
After a season with South Florida in the American Athletic Conference, where he posted 7.5 points per game and made a memorable debut with 10 points in 18 minutes against Florida, Williams transferred to Duquesne in spring 2025. There he averaged 15.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists, earning third‑team All‑Atlantic 10 honors before entering the transfer portal.
Now, Williams is slated to join a backcourt that includes John Mobley Jr., Justin Pippen, Curtis Givens III, LJ Smith and Anthony Thompson, as well as fellow transfers Andrija Jelavic. Head coach Jake Diebler and assistant Dru Joyce III, a former high school teammate of LeBron James, have praised his versatility, noting he can operate at point guard, shooting guard or wing.
Beyond the X’s and O’s, Williams has spoken about the emotional pull of being close to family, the state‑of‑the‑art facilities at Ohio State, and the camaraderie forged during a recent exhibition trip to Spain and Italy. He described the experience as a catalyst for team bonding and a glimpse of the culture he hopes to embed in the program.
With the season opener on the horizon, Williams is eager to contribute to the Buckeyes’ pursuit of a deep run in March. He sees himself fitting into three‑guard sets and believes his veteran presence will help guide younger teammates through the rigors of Big Ten competition.
