A New Era for the Mean Green
The University of North Texas Mean Green men's basketball program has secured a commitment from Marcus Zelee, a 6‑foot‑3 guard whose reputation as a two‑way player has been building across Texas.
Coach Daniyal Robinson highlighted Zelee's toughness, confidence and competitive spirit, noting that the recruit's ability to create his own shot and set up teammates aligns with the team's evolving identity.
Zelee arrives after a standout prep career that saw him lead Austin Prep Academy to the TCAL 5A State Championship finals and earn first‑team all‑state honors, while also guiding the Bears to two state semifinal appearances at Brentwood Christian School.
Statistically, he posted 13.5 points, 5.2 assists and 3.0 steals per game in his final season, a performance that placed him at No. 35 in the state and No. 63 nationally among point guards according to 247Sports.
His recruitment journey took a turn in July 2025 when he reopened his commitment after initially pledging to Iowa State, ultimately choosing UNT over a slate of suitors that included Cal, Charlotte, LIU, Mississippi State, Northern Illinois and UMass.
Robinson believes Zelee's blend of defensive intensity and playmaking will bolster the Mean Green's backcourt as the program looks to climb the conference standings in the upcoming 2026‑27 campaign.
The coaching staff sees Zelee as more than a talent upgrade; they view him as a cultural catalyst who can influence the locker room dynamics and set a standard for work ethic.
Fans can expect to see a player who brings a relentless drive, a trait that Robinson described as ‘the kind of grit that changes programs.’
With his arrival, the Mean Green hopes to translate early promise into tangible success on the national stage.
