The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) has finalized the classification structure for the 2026 field hockey season, dividing schools into three tiers that reflect enrollment size.
Division Breakdown
Class L represents the largest tier, encompassing 26 schools where at least 608 girls are enrolled. This group will face the most competitive matchups throughout the regular season.
Class M includes 25 schools with enrollment figures between 351 and 607 girls, offering a middle ground in terms of competition level and resources.
Class S gathers 26 schools whose rosters contain fewer than 350 participants, ensuring that smaller programs receive a dedicated championship pathway.
The season officially opens on Tuesday, September 8, marking the first day of regular‑season play across all divisions.
The CIAC tournament kicks off with its opening round on November 10, while any necessary qualifying matches are scheduled for November 5 through 7.
The championship games will be held on Saturday, November 21 at Wethersfield High School, a venue that has hosted the finals in recent years.
CIAC officials say the classification system is designed to promote balanced competition and give smaller programs a fair chance at postseason success.
