Hall of Fame Induction
Orlando “Tubby” Smith, the former Georgia men’s basketball coach, will be welcomed into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2026. The induction ceremony is scheduled for October 22 in Kansas City, Missouri, where the basketball community will gather to honor his contributions to the sport.
Smith’s early career at Georgia was marked by a rapid turnaround. Taking the reins in 1995, he guided a program that had been mired in mediocrity to its first 20‑win season in six years and secured its first NCAA tournament berth in five years. The highlight came in 1996 when his Georgia squad upset top‑seeded Purdue in the tournament, a victory that cemented his reputation as a builder of underdog teams.
After leaving Georgia, Smith took his talents to Kentucky, where in his inaugural season he led the Wildcats to a national championship. Over the course of his tenure, he coached five teams to the NCAA tournament, extending his influence beyond the state of Georgia and solidifying his place among the game’s modern architects.
His entire coaching journey spanned from 1991 to 2022, a period during which he amassed a legacy of resilience and excellence. He will be inducted alongside fellow legends Jay Wright and Danny Ainge, a testament to his lasting impact on college basketball.
The ceremony will be attended by Kevin Henderson, CEO of the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, who has overseen the organization’s growth and the selection process that recognized Smith’s achievements.
