A Fresh Look for Washington Huskies Basketball
The Washington Huskies men’s basketball program has not reached the NCAA tournament since 2019, but a combination of injury setbacks and a reshaped roster has set the stage for a potential breakthrough.
Only six players from last season are back, and several of them are still nursing lingering issues, forcing the coaching staff to rely heavily on newcomers to fill the void.
The team added nine new faces, among them three‑star forward Lattimore Ford from the Class of 2026, five transfers from the portal and three international prospects.
Junior center Lathan Sommerville, who has limited starting experience in the Big Ten, has been working intensively with Brazilian recruit Wini Braga, a newcomer trying to translate his NBB success to the collegiate level.
Braga brings a skill set comparable to former Huskies standout Hannes Steinbach, known for his rebounding and pick‑and‑roll efficiency, and he arrives after averaging 10.4 points and 6.2 rebounds in Brazil’s NBB.
Steinbach, drafted 14th overall by the Charlotte Hornets in the 2026 NBA Draft, provides a benchmark for Braga’s offensive role, while fellow big man Franck Kepnang has moved on to Kentucky, adding depth to the Wildcats.
The blend of domestic transfers, portal additions and overseas talent creates a competitive environment that could finally push the Huskies back into the NCAA tournament.
