A family under scrutiny
A quiet evening in a suburban Virginia neighborhood turned chaotic when an adult woman was found with gunshot wounds inside a home that serves as the residence of Eric Bieniemy, the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator.
Emergency responders from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene early Monday morning, locating the victim — identified as Mia Bieniemy — who was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The investigation quickly revealed that her son, Elijah Bieniemy, had been taken into custody.
Elijah Bieniemy, 22, was being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center, facing charges of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. Authorities have not released a motive, and the case remains under active investigation.
Head coach Andy Reid addressed the matter after practice later that day, offering only a brief statement that the organization is focused on supporting the family while respecting the legal process.
Eric Bieniemy, who returned to the Chiefs’ staff this season after a stint as offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders in 2023, was not present at the team’s morning practice, a detail that underscored the personal turmoil affecting the franchise.
The Bieniemy family’s home lies just three miles from the Commanders’ practice facility in Ashburn, a proximity that has drawn additional attention from local observers as the community grapples with the fallout of the shooting.
