The latest USA TODAY media poll places Ohio State at the top of the Big Ten, having collected the most first‑place votes, while Oregon is projected to finish second and defending national champion Indiana third. Michigan, despite a 9‑4 record last season and a 7‑2 conference mark, is slated to finish fifth in the league.
The Wolverines’ schedule this fall will test them against the three teams projected to finish ahead of them, with two of those matchups slated for November on the road. Analysts note that the slate is among the most demanding in the conference.
Adding to the narrative, Michigan’s coaching staff has undergone a major overhaul. Only Tony Alford remains from the previous regular‑season staff, and special teams coordinator Kerry Coombs is the sole other holdover, having been hired just last December.
On the field, the roster boasts a promising mix of talent. Former five‑star quarterback Bryce Underwood returns, while the backfield features standout duo Jordan Marshall and Savion Hiter. Wide receiver Andrew Marsh leads a deep receiving corps, and the defensive line includes potential All‑American John Henry Daley.
The secondary is anchored by four projected starters — Jyaire Hill, Zeke Berry, Smith Snowden and Rod Moore — giving the unit a solid foundation. However, media members do not anticipate the Wolverines will achieve a truly elite season, despite the intriguing mix of players.
Michigan will take part in Big Ten media day on July 30 before fall camp opens in early August, a timeline that will provide further clarity on how the new staff integrates the talent on the roster.
