Nathan Claerbaut, a Zeeland East alumnus, has officially joined the Artland Dragons in Quakenbruck, Germany, signing a professional contract that marks the next chapter of his basketball journey. The move follows a standout collegiate career in which he honed his skills across multiple programs and earned recognition for his defensive impact.
After beginning his college tenure at Ferris State, Claerbaut transferred to Central Michigan, where he played under the same coach who first introduced him to the sport. The decision to follow his mentor to Central Michigan was driven by a clear ambition to elevate his game and pursue opportunities overseas.
Defensive Dominance and Offensive Promise
During his senior season at Central Michigan, Claerbaut posted averages of 12.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 2.1 blocks per game, positioning him among the top defensive performers in the Mid-American Conference. His shot‑blocking ability earned him a spot on the MAC All‑Defensive Team, underscoring his reputation as a rim‑protecting force.
Artland Dragons head coach Hendrick Gruhn has praised Claerbaut’s blend of defensive skill and offensive upside, noting that the player’s potential is far from exhausted. Gruhn highlighted a recent performance in which Claerbaut recorded 11 blocks in a single game, a testament to his timing and athleticism.
Gruhn also emphasized that Claerbaut’s offensive game still has room to grow, suggesting that the big man could become a more consistent scoring threat as he adapts to the European style of play. The coach expressed confidence that the player’s work ethic and versatility will make him a valuable asset for the Dragons.
