The Washington Capitals announced this week that they have signed Finnish forward Oliver Suvanto to a three‑year entry‑level contract, a move that locks in one of the most highly anticipated talents of the 2026 draft class.
A New Chapter for the Capitals
Suvanto, who was selected 18th overall by the Capitals, is regarded as the premier center among international skaters and the third‑best player overall in the draft according to NHL Central Scouting.
Last season he recorded 11 points in 48 games for Tappara in Finland’s Liiga, the most ever by a player aged 17 or younger in that league, and earned the Esa Peltonen Award as the league’s top forward.
The Capitals envision him as a middle‑six pivot who can eventually grow into a more prominent scoring threat, noting his heavy, physical style combined with flashes of offensive creativity.
Internationally, Suvanto has represented Finland at the World Junior Championship and the Under‑18 World Championship, helping the senior team reach the bronze‑medal game and earning first‑team all‑star honors.
He is slated to spend the 2026‑27 campaign on loan with Tappara, where the club hopes his development will continue at a rapid pace before he makes the jump to North America.
