A Test of Grit
Tenino’s goalkeeper Gracie Sweet entered the Battle on the Blacktop championship game nursing an injury, but she refused to sit out. Her resilience paid off as she made four of the five saves in the penalty shootout, ultimately sealing a 1‑0 victory over W.F. West.
The match unfolded as a tightly contested back‑and‑forth battle, with both squads carving out several chances. Tenino and W.F. West each boast four tournament titles in the eight‑year history of the event, underscoring the competitive parity that has defined the championship.
Tenino head coach Trevor Fetbrandt praised his team’s grit and the game plan that allowed Sweet to shine, noting that the win provides a momentum boost as the team prepares for its season opener against Ocosta on September 3.
W.F. West’s attacking trio of Izzy Teeter, Mabriel Burger and Greta Oien generated numerous scoring opportunities, with Burger capturing the golden boot after netting seven goals throughout the tournament. Teeter, meanwhile, was recognized as the playmaker of the tournament, contributing six assists and four goals.
Both programs are now turning their focus to the upcoming season. Tenino’s captains have already begun planning for the next four weeks before their season opener against Capital on September 3, while W.F. West looks to build on its recent performances.
